Comfort Objects

Personal Research on Object Agency

Loneliness can be defined as “perceived social isolation,” or when people’s relationships fall short of how much social connection they want. Studies have shown that anthropomorphizing inanimate objects can alleviate loneliness and promote social connection.

When life gives you lemons, befriend them. Through this practice, we assume roles, identities, intentions, and emotions for the objects we develop a bond with. This not only tells us about our own cognitive states, but increases empathy and understanding.
